Product types
CBD now is available in many different forms. Some are generalized in their CBD distribution (sub-lingual oils and gel-caps), while others are localized (topicals, creams, and patches). Which type you choose is up to your discretion, depending on the discomfort you’re facing. Athletes might choose to apply a topical or a patch to a group of muscles they have been using vigorously, whereas someone who is facing a battle with anxiety might choose a tincture or gel-cap for a more “whole-body” distribution. Below we’ll look at the top 6 product types and how they can be effectively used in a CBD regimen.
Tinctures & How to Use
Tinctures are great. They’re easy to use, easy to meter (so you know how much you’re ingesting) and are fast acting. You just drop a couple drops in-between your tongue and cheek and let it sit there before swallowing. Dosages can range from 100mg to over 1500mg of CBD per bottle. Tinctures are the most common variety of CBD products available on the market.
A tincture is known to be most effective by not swallowing the liquid right away. You want to absorb as much CBD as you can through the mucus membranes in the mouth. Place the drops under your tongue and hold for around 30 seconds. Then swallow. Repeat as necessary until desired results are achieved.
Capsules & How to Use
CBD capsules are an easy way to add CBD to your diet as a daily supplement. They are much easier to take than tinctures and have much less of a risk of spilling or leaking. Capsules typically offer 10-25mg of CBD per capsule.
Capsules are great as they are an easy method to introduce CBD into your daily regimen. Just take one capsule (or as needed) daily with water. Your body takes more time to digest capsules, compared to a tincture, so you typically won’t “feel” anything or the effects right away. CBD Capsules are ideal to take as supplements for people who are looking to boost their endocannabinoid system or those who would like to take “precise” doses of CBD. This is much easier to do with capsules compared to vapes or tinctures.
Topicals & How to Use
Increasingly, brands have begun to add CBD onto topicals, such as lotions, salves, patches, and lip balms. CBD topicals are known to help with a variety of discomforts, and because they can be applied directly to the site of discomfort, are great for active lifestyles.
CBD creams are highly effective for any type of joint or muscle aches & strains. If you’re suffering from a medical condition, recovering from a sports injury, or even just a sore shoulder from sleeping in the wrong position, CBD topicals can provide an immediate relief. Apply generously to areas that could benefit and re-apply as necessary.
Sprays & How to Use
CBD sprays are just the same as Tinctures, however not as common. As the name suggests, with a spray you spray it into your mouth rather than use a dropper like with a Tincture or Oil. Typical concentration of CBD sprays ranges from 1-3mg per spray and up to 500mg per bottle.
Like tinctures, sprays are most effective by not swallowing the liquid right away. You want to absorb as much as you can sub-lingually. Spray the CBD oil under your tongue and hold for around 30-45 seconds. The serving size should be labeled on the bottle (typically 2-3 sprays). Use daily or as needed.
Vapes & How to Use
Using a vape pen to ingest CBD is highly effective in that you can easily modify the dosage you take, depending on how you feel. You can probably say you “feel” its effects much quicker in comparison to the other methods mentioned above.
In order to use a CBD vape, you will need an e-cigarette, vape pen, or vaporizer. Add the CBD oil to your vape liquid or apply drops onto the coil, heat and inhale the appropriate amount of vapor, or search out a pre-filled vape cart loaded with CBD.
Edibles & How to Use
Lastly, one of the easiest, and most delicious ways to ingest CBD is Via edibles. Gummy candies, Chocolate, Breath mints, even potato chips can now contain CBD. With all these options it’s not exactly the healthiest way to deliver CBD, but definitely the tastiest. The serving size should be labeled on the package, and you might have to limit yourself from eating them all!
If I must tell you how to use an edible, I’ll stick to telling you about this “golden rule” for taking any medication; “You can always take more if you need to, but once you have taken (any) drug, you can’t take less. You need to let it run the course and only afterwards will you know your personal limit and how much you should take in the future.”
Set (short for Mind-set) & Setting
Now that you’re informed as to some of the delivery methods of CBD, let’s talk about when and where the best places to take your CBD are.
If you’re brand new to CBD, no matter the delivery method, I wholeheartedly recommend that you try CBD with a trusted friend or partner who is of sound mind and body to be your “Guide.” Very rarely do people experience negative effects from CBD. However, depending on your ingestion method you might also be consuming different cannabinoids along with CBD. A trusted guide can be your “eyes & ears” if you’re unable. Just having someone to talk to, for reassurance, can be the difference between relief and regret.
Choose a familiar place.
While you experiment with CBD delivery and dosing, choosing a familiar, safe place, is paramount. Until you know how your mind and body react to a CBD regimen, resist the urge to “Explore.” Losing track of time, surroundings, & responsibilities, while not common, is possible. It is best to discover how these new compounds make you feel, rather than discovering the “trail” behind your house and where it leads.
Also, as a general warning, never consume CBD or other cannabinoids if you must operate heavy machinery or drive an automobile until you are 100% sure that you are of sound mind and body.
Lastly, and this more pertains to edibles that contain CBD, but make sure you store them in a safe place away from unsuspecting individuals. The last thing any of us want is to find out grandma ate your last bag of CBD chips, or you gave away your CBD chocolate as a Halloween candy.
